Our family loves to visit the beach and beach destinations are especially great for young kids because the sand and surf can provide endless hours of fun, free, relaxing entertainment. In this post, I’m going to share our top 4 favorite beach vacation destinations.
Hilton Head Island, SC is one of our favorite beach destinations and it’s very family-friendly.
Hilton Head has something for everyone in the family from shopping to hiking, to golfing to all kinds of water sports. While Hilton Head has a ton of dining options and night life, the vast majority cater to families and provide kid-friendly options and atmosphere. Our favorite thing to do on Hilton Head besides visiting the beach of course, is biking!
There are miles of paved, mostly flat, shady trails throughout the island to provide an enjoyable afternoon activity. You can read out about our latest visit to Hilton Head in this post.
If your budget is tight, Gulf Shores, Alabama is a great option for a family-friendly beach vacation, particularly in the off or shoulder seasons. Gulf Shores has miles and miles of coast line with a lot of options when it comes for accommodations.
It’s great for families because most of the accommodations are condos with full kitchens and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. Many rent for the same or less than what you would pay for a comparable hotel stay. Our favorite thing about Gulf Shores is the beach. The white soft sand is beautiful and perfect for long walks in the surf! Check out the other “must do” items on our Gulf Shores list in this post.
If your family enjoys getting a bit closer to nature and ocean life, Sanibel Island, Florida is the perfect destination. There are lots of close-to-nature activities on the island, including kayak tours through the mangroves, walking tours through the nature preserves and of course there’s the shell-hunting.
The Travel Channel ranked Sanibel Island as one of the top 10 best beaches in the world for shell hunting. We had a lot a of luck on our last trip to Sanibel.
We found these uninhabited conch shells in the edge of the surf just after a good storm! Just remember that it’s prohibited to take shells with something living inside! You can read more about our favorite local restaurants and other activities in this post.
For a slower paced vacation, steeped in sweet southern hospitality, Kiawah Island, South Carolina is your family’s best bet.
With it’s wide open, pristine beaches, impeccably landscaped common areas and serene nature preserves, Kiawah is quite possibly our family’s favorite beach vacation destination. While Kiawah has several shopping and dining options, there’s not a lot of hustle and bustle here which is perfect for relaxing and recharging.
And with Charleston, a short 40 minute drive away, its easy to take a day to explore the beautiful architecture, shopping and historic tours that the city has to offer. Read my full review and why Kiawah is great for families, in this post.
I hope you enjoyed reading about our family’s favorite beach destinations. I’d love to hear about your favorites!
